So I applied to the AmeriCorps Vista program.

In the middle of my class I get a call from them. My classmates and teacher say well gert out CALL THEM back!!! SO I stepped out in the middle of cIass  and  talked to th HR person today about applying sepcifically for youth services that has a crisis line for teens/homeless shelter...which seems familiarish to working at a DV shelter and crisis line. Pfcourse the issues I'd work with would be very different. Anyhoo So she's telling me all about the program and I 'm thinking So I'd be poor for a year. And say, "Ah man I always joked that once I graduated I would be handing out welfare to myself as they tell me how they'd help me with getting food stamps ... CUZ I"D BE POOR for a year." Thats okay. I don't care it's seems to interesting to care. Anyway So I will be interviewing for it next week. Scary.

I say go for it. Honestly, I spent the last 7 or so years of my life being a well paid professional, bought a condo at like...24 blah blah blah and guess what? I was fucking miserable. I'm not saying poor = happy, because lord knows the last while when I've been broke has been hard as hell, but doing something that you like and that interests you and makes you feel good is pretty awesome

I worked for an Americorps program last year :) And the Americorps intern was really cool ... she was just out of college, like a total hippie. I think she made like 12k a year, plus housing was covered. But she was having a total blast.

it was an environmental corps, we did stuff like maintaining elementary school's outside garden classrooms over the summer, working at an organic farm and teaching inner city kids about food, building rain gardens, and then fun stuff like canoeing. It was essentially manual labour for minimal pay all summer. It kicked ass. I was super tan and in amazing shape last summer, although I grew to hate weeding by the end of it all ....
